Where we started
A building is well insulated when one understands how energy, air and moisture move through it, not merely when more material is added. The usual question is “how many centimetres?”. We began with other questions: how heat passes through a construction, what happens to materials after decades, and what we bring into a person's home along with them.
The answers come from several disciplines at once: physics, chemistry, materials science and building physics. For this reason we have worked with professors, researchers, engineers, physicians and testing laboratories, and we continue to do so.
Insulation as a system
Heat is transferred by conduction, convection and radiation, while air and vapour circulate through the building envelope. Good insulation addresses all of these, not merely a lambda value or a thickness.
The INCERC report formed the basis of the System 10 concept: the insulating fibre, the reflective surfaces, the air layers and the membranes are analysed as a single assembly.
We live with the insulation on the interior
Between a person and the insulation there are a few centimetres and a layer of finish, for decades. For this reason, for materials on the interior side, we consider three aspects: performance, composition and long-term stability.
A test showing that emissions fall within a limit certifies compliance with that limit, not their absence. Where technology permits, we prefer not to add a substance that is not necessary at all.
Research as part of development
We observe, calculate, model, test and compare the results. We aim to be able to explain why a system works and which documentation supports its performance.
